5 Tips to Cope When Your Kids are Sick
This article I am writing right now is late because, you guessed it, my kids are sick. We are dealing with sore throats and fevers that came without warning and have yet to abate. I’ve been a mom for 19 years now, and I’ve learned a few things about how to manage kids, sickness and family. So here are my 5 tips to cope when your kids are sick.
Keep a well-stocked medicine cabinet.
This one took me a few kids (and more than one early morning medicine run) to convince me how important it is. Like a lot of moms, I don’t like “medicating” my kids. I prefer to go the natural route whenever possible and let a fever run it’s course when it can. Sometimes, however, the fever is too high or pain is affecting the ability of my child to sleep. In those cases, I am so thankful for my medicine cabinet. I now keep it stocked with: pain reliever, fever reducer, a digital thermometer, anti-histamine, tissue and cough drops. Some of these packages remain unopened, but I have the comfort of knowing they are there if I need them.
Keep a secret stash of popsicles.
Dehydration comes on fast in children, especially when they are sick and unwilling to eat or drink much. If possible, hide a box of popsicles (where husband kids won’t find them). My kids have never been willing to drink those electrolyte replacement drinks, even the ones made for kids. Popsicles thought? Those are an easy sell and the cold soothes sore throats.
Keep a few easy meals on hand.
Give yourself permission to pull out the frozen corndogs and chicken nuggets (we’ve had them twice already this week). Doctoring sick, clingy kids and cleaning up vomit is no time to be preparing fresh meals in the kitchen. Keep a few things on hand for sick days. You can even get a basket or bin labeled “sick days” and fill it with mac and cheese, canned chicken noodle soup and saltine crackers. That way everything in on hand when sickness strikes.
Keep a special sick day toy box.
Stock this box with a couple of DVD’s, silly putty, a comic book, small plastic animals and only pull it out on sick days. This will help keep the kids distracted and maybe even buy you a few minutes of peace (so you can go heat up that chicken broth). Sicks days home from school can be long (believe, me, I’m on day five here). You won’t regret this.
